Passport applications are great sources of information, especially for foreign-born people who became US citizens by either going through the naturalization process themselves, or by being a child when their father became naturalized. US citizens were not required to have a passport to travel abroad except 1861-1862, 1918-1921, and 1941-present. When passports were not required, many foreign-born naturalized citizens got them to ease travel across borders. Passports were issued in 1863-1866 and 1907-1920 to aliens who declared their intentions of becoming a citizen. Photographs accompany the applications after 1914. Indexes to passport applications for the years 1810-1817, 1830-1831, 1834-1923 are at the National Archives. Passport applications for the years 1795-1812, 1830-1831, 1833-1925 are at the National Archives. Passport applications after 1925 and indexes after 1923 are located at the State Department. Passports were valid for 2 years or less. Passport numbers can be found on some passenger lists, try the Ellis Island web site. This example from 1921 includes name, date and place of birth, arrival date in US, residence, date and place of naturalization, address, occupation, purpose of trip, departure port/ship/date, signature and physical description of applicant, photograph, affidavit of witness, and his seaman's identification card.
